A dangerous ice storm is set to hit the Midwest and Northeast, bringing treacherous road conditions, power outages, and significant disruptions for millions of Americans. The storm, expected to unfold Wednesday and Thursday, will deliver a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across a wide swath of the country.
What’s Happening?
According to AccuWeather, a low-pressure system is moving eastward, colliding warm, humid air from the south with frigid arctic air from the north. This clash of air masses is creating the perfect conditions for a major ice storm. Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham warns that the storm could bring accumulating snow and dangerous ice accumulation, particularly along its northern edge.
The storm will first impact the Midwest and Great Lakes regions on Wednesday before shifting eastward to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by Thursday. The National Weather Service has already issued ice storm warnings for parts of West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
How Much Ice and Snow Are Expected?
Forecasters predict up to a quarter inch of ice accumulation in western Maryland, West Virginia, and central and southern Pennsylvania. In the central Appalachians, parts of Pennsylvania, and southern New York, ice accumulation could reach up to half an inch. Cities at the highest risk include Harrisburg, Scranton, State College, and Williamsport in Pennsylvania, as well as Binghamton, New York, and Cumberland, Maryland.
Snowfall will also be significant in some areas. Northeastern Pennsylvania, eastern New York, northern Connecticut, western and central Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine could see 1 to 3 inches of snow, with higher elevations potentially receiving up to 6 inches or more.
Why Are Ice Storms So Dangerous?
Ice storms pose serious risks, particularly for travelers and power infrastructure. Even a light glaze of ice can make roads, bridges, and ramps dangerously slick. AccuWeather’s chief meteorologist, Jonathan Porter, explains that a half-inch of ice can add 500 pounds or more of weight to power lines, increasing the risk of outages. Tree branches coated in ice can also snap and fall onto power lines, exacerbating the problem.
The storm’s impact on major roadways, including Interstates 80 and 94, could lead to hazardous driving conditions. Along the I-95 corridor, cities like Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston may experience a brief period of icing before the precipitation changes to rain.
Power Outages and Gusty Winds
In addition to icy conditions, the Midwest and Northeast could face power outages as freezing rain is followed by cold, gusty winds. Wind gusts of 40-50 mph are expected across the Great Lakes on Thursday, with gusts exceeding 30 mph in the Northeast on Friday. These strong winds could further damage power lines and prolong outages.
Stormy Start to February
This ice storm is just the beginning of what could be a stormy February for the region. A second winter storm is expected to bring snow and ice to the upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast starting Saturday. A third storm is possible early next week, with the potential for colder air and more moisture, which could lead to additional snow and icy impacts.
Historically, February is the snowiest month in the Northeast, with more “high-impact” snowstorms occurring during this time than in any other month, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.
