Ottawa [Canada], February 3: Canada has announced a detailed list of US products facing retaliatory tariffs, valued at $30 billion, in response to recent US trade measures. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc revealed the plan, targeting items such as US-made alcohol, household appliances, tools, firearms, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and clothing.
The decision comes after US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, along with a 10% duty on Chinese imports. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the countermeasures, which will take effect Tuesday, impacting $155 billion worth of American products.
Chrystia Freeland, a leading Canadian political figure, called the US tariffs a “terrible” and “lose-lose” move, stressing the potential harm to both economies. Trump, however, defended his decision, admitting it might cause “pain” but claiming it was a necessary step for long-term benefits.
The trade dispute has drawn criticism from other nations as well. China plans to challenge the US at the World Trade Organization, while Mexico announced its own retaliatory tariffs and denied Trump’s accusations of government ties to criminal groups.
This escalating trade conflict underscores rising tensions among major global trading partners, with significant implications for international trade and economic stability.
