Premier Doug Ford terminated a $100 million CAD Starlink internet infrastructure contract in response to U.S. tariffs. He also banned American companies from provincial contract bidding, declaring, “Canada didn’t start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we’re ready to win it.”
The deal, originally signed in November to expand high-speed internet in rural and northern Ontario, was scrapped as a retaliatory measure. Ford positioned the move as protecting Canadian economic interests, posting on X that Ontario won’t do business with those “hellbent on destroying our economy.”
The announcement coincides with Ford calling a provincial election, potentially adding political momentum to his trade retaliation stance.
