US Announces Funding Review Over South African Land Policy

Read Time:53 Second

Former President Trump has stated he will suspend US funding to South Africa in response to the country’s recently enacted Expropriation Act. The announcement, made via Truth Social, cites concerns over property rights and calls for an investigation into the policy’s implementation.

South Africa’s Expropriation Act, which became law under President Ramaphosa’s administration, enables land acquisition without compensation under specific conditions. The legislation aims to address historical land ownership imbalances by redistributing 30% of agricultural land to black farmers over the next five years.

The funding decision occurs amid broader diplomatic tensions, as some US legislators question South Africa’s international positions and its participation in preferential trade agreements like the African Growth and Opportunity Act.

President Ramaphosa defended the legislation, emphasizing that it operates within South Africa’s constitutional framework and involves a structured negotiation process with landowners. He indicated his willingness to engage in dialogue with Trump to address concerns about the law and other bilateral matters.

Current US assistance programs to South Africa, particularly in healthcare initiatives like HIV/AIDS treatment, remain active despite the announcement.
