Millions of Americans are gearing up for a significant drop in temperatures as a polar vortex prepares to unleash life-threatening cold starting this weekend. While many areas enjoyed mild weather to close out the workweek, the brief warmup is giving way to an arctic blast that will impact most of the nation.
How Low Will Temperatures Go?
The upcoming cold wave will be severe, with cities like Minneapolis forecasted to see highs plummet from 34°F on Thursday to a frigid -3°F by Sunday. FOX Weather Meteorologist Britta Merwin emphasized the widespread nature of the chill, noting that even regions as far south as Florida could feel the effects.
“These systems are rare but impactful,” Merwin said. “If you’re trying to escape the cold by heading south, think again. This arctic air mass will leave no region untouched.”
Impact Across the Nation
By Monday, more than 300 million people will experience below-average temperatures, with some regions dropping as much as 45°F below seasonal norms. At least 20 states, from the Plains to the Great Lakes and interior Northeast, will face subzero conditions.
The polar vortex’s reach will extend to the Deep South, where most of the Lower 48 states are expected to experience freezing temperatures, sparing only parts of South Florida. Southern cities like Atlanta, unaccustomed to such cold, are bracing for lows in the teens early next week.
Wind Chill Warnings
Dangerous wind chills will make the cold even more severe, with some areas feeling like -50°F. Such extreme conditions significantly increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, making proper precautions essential.
Residents in areas like western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, still recovering from Hurricane Helene, may face additional challenges due to the bitter cold.
Cold Weather Alerts Issued
Major cities, including New York, are preparing for the arctic blast. A Cold Weather Alert is in effect in New York City, with the Department of Public Health issuing a Code Blue. Outreach teams have been mobilized to provide shelter to the city’s most vulnerable populations.
“No one who is homeless and seeking shelter in New York City during a Code Blue will be denied,” NYC Emergency Management announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Chill May Persist
Although a slight reprieve in temperatures may occur midweek, the FOX Forecast Center predicts continued arctic intrusions toward the end of January. The month has already seen temperatures 5–10°F below average in parts of the eastern U.S., making this one of the coldest Januarys in recent memory.
