The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the State of Colorado have filed a lawsuit against Greystar, a leading rental property management company, alleging it misled renters with undisclosed fees. According to the FTC, Greystar advertised low monthly rents but later imposed hidden “junk fees,” adding significant costs for tenants.
FTC Chair Lina M. Khan stated that the lawsuit aims to protect renters from deceptive practices and hold companies accountable for transparency. Greystar denied the allegations, labeling the lawsuit as “headline-driven litigation” and criticizing the FTC for not collaborating to address industry concerns.
This legal action reflects increased regulatory attention on rental housing practices, particularly regarding cost transparency. The lawsuit seeks to end misleading advertising and ensure renters are fully informed of all charges associated with their leases. Investigations into Greystar’s practices are ongoing as the case develops.
