Germany Faces Severe Weather and Travel Disruptions

Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

Germany is bracing for extreme weather conditions this weekend, with heavy snow, black ice, freezing rain, and strong winds expected to sweep across large areas of the country. The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has warned that these hazardous conditions will begin Saturday night and continue into Sunday, caused by a low-pressure system that has already wreaked havoc in the UK.

Flight Delays and Cancellations Likely

Lufthansa, along with Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport, has issued advisories of potential flight delays and cancellations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The country’s largest airport, Frankfurt, is expected to experience disruptions, including cancellations, due to the severe weather.

Black Ice and Snowfall Risks

The DWD has highlighted the danger of black ice, particularly in the regions between the Black Forest, Lake Constance, and the Bavarian Forest, where roads could become slippery and hazardous. Snowfall is anticipated in the western low mountain ranges, with up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) expected in some areas. The snow will turn into freezing rain, and temperatures could drop to -8°C (17.6°F) in certain locations. Mountainous areas will also experience strong winds, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 100 kph (62 mph).

Other Affected Regions

In the UK, the Met Office has issued two amber and two yellow weather alerts due to heavy snow and freezing rain. Snowfalls of up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) are expected in some areas, leading to potential travel disruptions and power outages.

In the US, over 55 million people are in the path of a dangerous winter storm, with the National Weather Service warning of blizzard conditions across the central plains and Mid-Atlantic regions. Winter storm warnings and advisories have been issued from Montana to Maryland.

Safety Recommendations

Authorities across the affected areas are urging people to stay informed about weather developments, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for possible disruptions to services such as transport and electricity. As severe weather impacts multiple countries, staying cautious and prepared is crucial to minimizing risks.
