Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni Visits Trump at Mar-a-Lago
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with US President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Saturday, just weeks before his January inauguration.
Meloni’s visit adds to a growing list of global leaders who have traveled to Florida to build relationships with Trump following his November election win. Argentinian President Javier Milei, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are among those who have also made similar trips.
Meloni, known for her security-first approach and similar political views to Trump, is seen as a key partner in improving US-EU relations. Her close ties to tech billionaire Elon Musk, who is expected to play a significant role in Trump’s second term, further strengthen their connection.
During the meeting, Meloni and Trump discussed important global issues, including the Middle East, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and Italy’s strained relations with Iran, particularly following the December arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala.
Social media videos show Trump warmly welcoming Meloni to Mar-a-Lago, where the crowd applauded her presence. “This is very exciting. I’m here with a fantastic woman, the prime minister of Italy,” Trump told the guests.
The meeting also featured a private screening of a documentary focused on the challenges faced by conservative lawyers in the legal system. Among the attendees were several individuals nominated for key roles in Trump’s administration, including Marco Rubio, Mike Waltz, and Scott Bessent.
Trump’s first-term hardline policies on Iran, including a “maximum pressure campaign,” were a key point of discussion. Analysts predict that similar approaches could be adopted in his second term.
Although no official statements have been made yet, this high-profile meeting between Trump and Meloni signals the potential reshaping of US-EU relations as Trump prepares to return to the White House.
