Russia Claims to Shoot Down ATACMS Missiles
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its air defense systems intercepted eight US-made ATACMS missiles and 72 drones on Saturday. These long-range missiles, supplied by the US to Ukraine, have a range of up to 300 kilometers (190 miles) and can strike deep into Russian territory. Moscow has warned that Ukraine’s deployment of these weapons could prompt a retaliatory hypersonic missile strike targeting central Kyiv.

The ministry did not disclose any details about potential casualties or damage caused by the interceptions. In a related development, Moscow also claimed control of the village of Nadiya in Ukraine’s eastern Luhansk region, though this claim remains unverified.

Drone Threats Temporarily Shut St. Petersburg Airport
Operations at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport were temporarily suspended due to security concerns. Reports suggest Ukrainian drones in the area prompted the halt of takeoffs and landings for several hours.

Russian forces reportedly destroyed 16 Ukrainian drones across several regions, including Bryansk, Smolensk, Belgorod, Pskov, and Leningrad—all surrounding St. Petersburg. Operations at the airport resumed later, according to Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsia.

Heightened Tensions and Geopolitical Risks
The delivery of US-supplied ATACMS missiles significantly enhances Ukraine’s military capabilities, potentially shifting dynamics in the ongoing conflict. Russia’s threat of retaliatory hypersonic strikes raises concerns about further escalation.

The temporary closure of Pulkovo Airport highlights the growing impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure and travel within Russia, signaling the increasing reach of hostilities into Russian territory.
