A tragic attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve claimed the lives of at least 15 people and injured dozens more when a vehicle drove into a crowd. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran, was killed during a shootout with police. The FBI is now treating the incident as a terrorist act, with evidence suggesting links to the Islamic State (IS) extremist group.
Chaos Unfolds on Bourbon Street
The horrific event took place in New Orleans’ French Quarter, on Bourbon and Canal Streets, a popular hotspot for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Around 3:15 a.m. local time, a pick-up truck rammed into a large crowd, creating panic and leading to numerous casualties.
New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick called it a “mass casualty incident” and urged everyone to stay clear of the area as authorities investigated.
Signs of Terrorism Emerge
The FBI discovered an IS flag in the suspect’s vehicle, along with what appeared to be improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Investigators are still determining whether the devices were operational.
The suspect had also shared extremist content on social media just before the attack, pledging allegiance to IS and expressing a desire to kill. This evidence led authorities to classify the attack as terrorism.
Suspect Killed, Other Suspects Sought
While attempting to escape, the suspect fired on police officers, wounding two. The suspect was ultimately killed in a confrontation with law enforcement. The FBI has indicated that the suspect was likely not acting alone and is currently searching for any possible accomplices, appealing to the public for help.
“We believe others may be involved in this tragic act,” said FBI Special Agent Althea Duncan.
Response from President Biden
President Joe Biden offered his condolences to the victims and their families, calling the attack “horrific” and offering full federal support to New Orleans. He also noted that the suspect had posted videos prior to the attack, indicating his inspiration from IS and his intent to kill.
Biden added that authorities were also investigating whether a Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas, which occurred the same evening, had any connection to the New Orleans incident.
Political Backlash
In the aftermath, President-elect Donald Trump weighed in, linking the attack to illegal immigration. “This is what happens when we fail to secure our borders,” he posted, criticizing the current administration’s policies.
Despite his remarks, FBI data indicates a significant decline in violent crime across the U.S. in recent years, calling into question the validity of Trump’s claims.
Local and Global Reactions
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry condemned the violence as a “horrific act” and encouraged people to pray for the victims. He also asked the public to avoid the area as the investigation continued.
French President Emmanuel Macron shared his condolences, highlighting New Orleans’ special connection to France. “New Orleans, so dear to the hearts of the French, has been struck by terrorism,” Macron wrote on social media.
Rising Concern Over Vehicular Attacks
This attack adds to a growing number of incidents where vehicles have been used as weapons. Just before Christmas, a Saudi-born psychiatrist carried out a similar attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, killing five people and injuring more than 200. These incidents underscore the escalating threat posed by vehicular terrorism.
City in Mourning
As investigations continue, New Orleans faces the aftermath of a senseless act of violence. Local and federal authorities are working together to uncover the suspect’s motives and potential connections. The city, known for its resilience, mourns the victims while hoping for a swift recovery for the injured.
