Cyclone Chido Strikes Mozambique, Causing Severe Damage

Read Time:58 Second

Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique’s northern coastal provinces, including Cabo Delgado, on December 15, 2024. The storm brought powerful winds, intense rain, and flash flooding, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. With wind speeds reaching 140 km/h, the cyclone uprooted trees, damaged buildings, and left communities severely impacted.

As of Sunday morning, three fatalities have been confirmed in Pemba, the provincial capital. Rescue operations are ongoing, although access to some areas remains difficult due to flooded roads and rising water levels.

UNICEF Mozambique reported the urgent need for emergency aid, including shelter, clean water, and medical supplies, to prevent further harm. The cyclone struck an already vulnerable region, where ongoing conflict and displacement had left many communities in precarious conditions.

Mozambique’s Meteorological Institute has warned of continued heavy rainfall and potential landslides in low-lying areas over the next two days. Cyclone Chido’s destructive impact highlights the region’s growing vulnerability to climate-related disasters and the need for stronger disaster preparedness and infrastructure.

Authorities are continuing to assess the full scope of the damage, and aid efforts are underway to support affected populations. Stay tuned for further updates.
