Elton John has publicly criticized the legalization of marijuana, calling it “one of the greatest mistakes of all time.” In an interview with Time Magazine, the 77-year-old music icon expressed concerns about the drug’s addictive properties and its potential to lead to harder substances.
“I believe it’s addictive. It leads to other drugs,” John shared. “And when you’re stoned — I’ve been there — you don’t think clearly.”
Reflecting on his personal history with substance abuse, John admitted that cocaine was his drug of choice, introduced to him by his former manager and lover, John Reid. His turning point came after the tragic death of his close friend, Ryan White, who died of AIDS. This loss led John to check into Chicago’s Parkside Lutheran Hospital in 1990, where he committed to sobriety, a path he has followed for over 30 years.
“It all came to a head at Ryan White’s funeral,” John recalled. “I realized how much I had lost and how far I had fallen.”
John also opened up about how drug use led to poor decisions and strained relationships. “You make awful choices on drugs. I hurt many people because of my need for love,” he admitted.
Now sober, John has made it his mission to help others overcome addiction. He has supported fellow musicians, including sponsoring Eminem in Alcoholics Anonymous and offering guidance to Boy George. John also mourned the loss of George Michael, who died in 2016 due to health complications linked to alcohol abuse.
“It’s hard to tell someone they’re being an a—hole,” John said, reflecting on the difficult conversations he’s had with friends about sobriety. He emphasized that his own recovery began with acknowledging his past mistakes.
John’s comments on marijuana legalization are likely to stir debate, with some praising the benefits of legalization while others, like John, remain cautious about its effects. Stay tuned for further updates on this ongoing story.
