Over 10,000 residents of Malibu, including celebrities Cher and Dick Van Dyke, are anxiously awaiting the all-clear to return to their homes as firefighters continue to battle the Franklin Fire. The wildfire, which began late Monday night, has expanded to more than six square miles (15.8 sq km), forcing widespread evacuations and leaving the community in uncertainty.
Wildfire’s Rapid Expansion
The fire ignited in the steep canyons of Malibu, fueled by the powerful Santa Ana winds that have become a seasonal threat in California. By Wednesday morning, the blaze was only 7% contained, with more than 1,500 firefighters on the ground.
“The rugged terrain, combined with the strong winds and dry conditions, continues to challenge fire crews,” said Cal Fire in a recent update. However, improved weather forecasts bring some hope for firefighters and residents alike.
Evacuations and Threats to Malibu Homes
Evacuation orders are still in effect for over 12,600 people, with at least 7,500 homes and structures threatened. Malibu, known for its luxurious homes and iconic beach views, is once again in the midst of a wildfire crisis.
The flames moved quickly, crossing the Pacific Coast Highway and threatening the historic Malibu Pier, as well as Pepperdine University, where 3,000 students were forced to shelter on campus. Early assessments suggest that damage to structures has been minimal, with little to no reported damage on the university’s campus.
Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart remained cautiously optimistic, stating, “We’re in a better position this morning than we were over the past 30 hours,” though officials warned that gusty winds could continue through Wednesday.
Cher and Dick Van Dyke Among Evacuated Residents
Celebrity residents like Cher and Dick Van Dyke are also among those who were forced to evacuate. Van Dyke, who turns 99 on Friday, shared that he and his wife, Arlene Silver, had to leave their home with their pets.
“Arlene and I have safely evacuated with our animals, except for Bobo, who escaped while we were leaving. We’re hoping he’ll be OK and that our community in Serra Retreat will survive this devastating fire,” Van Dyke said.
Cher, who also evacuated her Malibu home, is staying at a hotel for the time being, according to her publicist, Liz Rosenberg.

While Malibu often draws attention for its celebrity residents, local advocates emphasize the difficulties faced by middle- and lower-income families, ranchers, and farmers who call the area home.
Kasey Earnest, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, expressed concern for these residents, saying, “I refer to them as the heart of Malibu. They’re normal families – not the ones with helicopters landing on their property.”

Utility Shutdowns and Fire Prevention Efforts
To prevent fires caused by electrical equipment, Southern California Edison shut off power to more than 40,000 customers, including those in Malibu, on Monday evening. This preemptive measure is part of the utility’s ongoing efforts to minimize fire risks from the dry Santa Ana winds.
The decision follows the 2018 Woolsey Fire, which was linked to Edison equipment and caused widespread devastation in Malibu, killing three people and destroying over 1,600 homes.
