A California man who went missing 25 years ago has been located in a hospital after his sister recognized his photo in a news article, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The man, who disappeared from Doyle, California, near Reno, Nevada, was found in a Los Angeles-area hospital. His sister identified him in a USA Today article from earlier this year, which sought help in identifying a nonverbal patient.
Upon hearing from his sister, authorities investigated and learned that the patient had been transferred to another hospital in July. A Los Angeles police detective confirmed his identity through fingerprinting.
The family is now preparing for a joyful reunion. “The sister was thrilled and immediately shared the news with other relatives,” said Captain Mike Carney of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.
Carney stressed the importance of persistence in missing persons cases, calling this outcome a “perfect example” of why families should never lose hope.
While the man’s identity is being kept private, authorities confirmed he is in good health. This case highlights the power of media in reuniting families after years of uncertainty.
For this California family, this Thanksgiving will be especially meaningful.
