Germany’s Green Party has nominated Robert Habeck as their lead candidate for the upcoming February snap elections. Habeck, who currently serves as Deputy Chancellor and Economy Minister, received overwhelming support at a party conference in Wiesbaden, securing 96.48% of delegate votes (741 out of 768).
Despite the Greens’ current polling at 11-12%, Habeck expressed optimism about the party’s prospects. He acknowledged past challenges during his coalition tenure but emphasized that the snap election offers a fresh start. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who led the party in the 2021 elections, stepped aside and endorsed Habeck, praising his leadership particularly in reducing Germany’s dependence on Russian energy.
The party also appointed new co-leaders: Franziska Brantner, a foreign policy expert, and Felix Banaszak, a 35-year-old representing the younger generation. This leadership change comes as the Greens aim to improve upon their 14.7% result from the 2021 federal elections and rebuild voter trust.
While Habeck’s nomination technically positions him as a potential Chancellor candidate, the party recognizes the challenges ahead given their current polling numbers. However, they remain hopeful that the dynamic nature of snap elections could lead to significant shifts in voter sentiment.
