On October 9, Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm with winds up to 120 mph, wreaked havoc on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The hurricane’s aftermath has left a trail of destruction, dramatically altering the coastline and devastating numerous communities. This disaster comes on the heels of Hurricane Helene, compounding the damage to the region.
Coastal Areas Bear the Brunt
Barrier islands like Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island were among the most severely affected areas. Satellite imagery reveals extensive beach erosion, with sand pushed inland, covering streets and buildings. The Florida National Guard’s aerial survey exposed widespread devastation, including scattered debris and significant infrastructure damage.
Siesta Key residents are grappling with water safety issues and power outages, while Anna Maria Island has closed its beaches and government offices to focus on recovery efforts.
Flooding Paralyzes Clearwater and Tampa
Clearwater and Tampa experienced severe flooding, necessitating boat and high-water vehicle rescues. One Clearwater resident reported losing everything to chest-high floodwaters. In Tampa, numerous homes were almost entirely submerged. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office evacuated over 135 residents from an assisted living facility due to rising floodwaters.
Coastal Communities in Ruins
The fishing village of Cortez in Sarasota County, already damaged by Hurricane Helene, suffered further destruction. Roads were covered in debris, docks were destroyed, and many homes were reduced to rubble. Satellite images show a landscape strewn with fallen trees, collapsed power lines, and shattered buildings.
Manasota Key, south of Sarasota, also experienced significant damage. The storm surge sent large boulders and boats crashing into waterfront buildings, leaving behind sand piles up to six feet high. The beach has been severely eroded, bringing Gulf waters much closer to the shoreline.
Casualties and Recovery Efforts
The hurricane has claimed at least 24 lives, with thousands of residents struggling in its aftermath. Approximately 3 million people lost power across Florida, though authorities expect electricity to be fully restored by Tuesday night.
The federal government has authorized an additional $612 million in aid to support recovery efforts in Florida and North Carolina, which was also impacted by Hurricane Helene. However, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and affected communities face a long road to recovery.
