The Hunter’s Moon, this year’s third supermoon, will reach its peak on October 17 at 7:30 AM ET. Due to its close approach to Earth, this celestial spectacle will outshine a typical full moon by up to 30% and appear 15% larger.
Supermoons occur when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. This particular supermoon will come within 222,056 miles of our planet, making it the nearest and most prominent of 2024. For the best viewing experience, observers should look to the horizon during moonrise or moonset when the moon appears most magnificent.
The Hunter’s Moon will be visible across the United States, with the eastern sky offering the most striking views at moonrise. While it peaks on October 17, the moon will appear nearly full on October 16 and 18 as well. Stargazers can spot it rising in Pisces, with Jupiter and Saturn nearby. An extra special sight awaits on October 20, when the moon will rise alongside Jupiter.
The supermoon’s increased size and brightness result from its proximity to Earth, creating a stunning visual display. This effect is amplified when viewed near the horizon, where terrestrial objects create an optical illusion, further enhancing the moon’s apparent size.
For optimal viewing, seek out locations with clear, unobstructed views of the horizon. Urban dwellers may need to venture to areas with less light pollution. Binoculars or telescopes can enhance the experience by revealing lunar surface details.
