Chelsea’s presence in the Conference League is unprecedented for a club of their stature. Their sixth-place finish in last season’s Premier League initially secured a Europa League spot. However, Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City resulted in Chelsea being relegated to the Conference League, a competition established in 2021. The Blues had to overcome Swiss side Servette in the playoffs to secure their place in the group stage.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made the strategic decision to leave Palmer out of the Conference League squad to manage his playing time and prevent exhaustion. The 21-year-old has had an exceptional start to the Premier League season, contributing six goals and four assists. Maresca clarified that while Palmer is a key player, his omission is a preventative measure to safeguard his fitness and maintain his high performance level.
Maresca explained to BeIN Sports, “There’s a specific reason for his absence, and I believe Cole needs to be protected.” Chelsea will have the opportunity to revise their squad for the knockout phase, potentially allowing Palmer to rejoin European competition later in the season.

Chelsea’s Conference League campaign begins with a home match against Belgian side Gent at Stamford Bridge. The group stage will see them face teams such as Panathinaikos, Noah, Heidenheim, Astana, and Shamrock Rovers.
