“Unrelenting Wildfires Scorch Southern Greece”

Read Time:56 Second

For the third straight day, wildfires continue to ravage Southern Greece’s Corinthia region in the Peloponnese mountains. A massive firefighting effort is underway, with over 400 firefighters and 22 aircraft deployed. Despite this, the blaze persists, causing extensive damage and claiming two lives.

The European Union has stepped in to assist as the fire consumes vast forested areas. Aircraft from Croatia and Italy have joined Greece’s fire service, yet the situation remains critical. Local residents watch helplessly as their lands burn, drawing parallels to the devastating fires of 2000.

This year’s wildfire season has started earlier and proven more challenging than usual, with over 4,500 fires reported since April. The current Corinthia blaze is just one of 41 fires recorded nationwide in the past day alone.

Climate change has heightened Greece’s vulnerability to wildfires, a problem shared by other southern European nations. Extended drought and intense summer heat have left the countryside parched and highly flammable, making this potentially the most dangerous fire season in over 20 years. Despite ongoing firefighting efforts and international aid, the fires are expected to continue in the coming days.
