Chinese electric vehicle leader BYD is recalling almost 97,000 of its Dolphin and Yuan Plus models because of a fault in the steering component. According to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), this defect could potentially lead to fire risks, prompting immediate action from the company. The affected vehicles were produced between November 2022 and December 2023.
As the largest seller of electric vehicles globally, BYD plans to implement a physical fix through its dealerships. While the company has not yet commented publicly, this recall underscores the critical importance of vehicle safety, particularly since the Dolphin and Yuan Plus accounted for 26% of BYD’s sales in 2023.
Although recalls are uncommon for BYD, this incident echoes a 2022 case involving the Tang plug-in hybrid model, which was recalled due to battery-related fire risks. The current recall, while significant, reflects the automaker’s dedication to addressing safety issues and preserving consumer confidence.
BYD’s quick response is crucial, as electric vehicle safety remains a paramount concern in the rapidly expanding EV market.
