Typhoon Krathon is pounding the northernmost Philippine islands, leading to evacuations and widespread shutdowns. The storm, packing winds of 175 kph (109 mph) and gusts reaching 215 kph (133 mph), poses a severe threat to coastal villages in Cagayan, Batanes, and the Babuyan islands.
Authorities have evacuated hundreds of residents from flood-prone areas, and schools in affected regions have been closed. The Philippine weather service has issued warnings of life-threatening storm surges, fierce winds, and large waves, which could cause extensive damage to homes and farmlands.
Ferry services have been suspended, and power outages have been reported in Cagayan. As the typhoon tracks westward, it is expected to intensify into a super typhoon by Tuesday, possibly shifting its path toward Taiwan.
This severe storm underscores the Philippines’ susceptibility to natural disasters, as the country experiences around 20 typhoons annually. Residents are advised to stay alert as the situation evolves.
