X Takes Steps to Resolve Brazil’s Legal Dispute

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

After weeks of tension, Elon Musk’s platform X (formerly Twitter) is finally making strides to comply with Brazil’s Supreme Court demands. The social media giant had faced a major block in Brazil due to its failure to address hate speech and other issues, leading to a legal standoff.

Reports from The New York Times reveal that X has now taken key actions to meet the court’s conditions. The company has appointed Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its new legal representative in Brazil and has removed several accounts flagged by the court as threats to democracy. Additionally, X has paid the fines it owed.

However, the Supreme Court has pointed out that X still needs to submit some crucial paperwork to formally confirm its legal representation, a requirement under Brazilian law. X now has five days to get this sorted out, as reported by Reuters.

The platform briefly came back online in Brazil earlier this week using Cloudflare’s DNS, but X clarified that this was an unintended and temporary fix. In a statement, X acknowledged the situation, saying, “While we expect the platform to be inaccessible again in Brazil soon, we continue to work with the Brazilian government to return for the people of Brazil.”

Brazil has imposed hefty fines on X and Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, for failing to comply with the ban, with daily fines approaching $1 million. Users in Brazil also face potential fines of around $8,900 if they use a VPN to access the platform.

This move by X is a positive step toward resolving the ongoing issues and potentially resuming its operations in Brazil legally.
