Birmingham Nightlife Mass Shooting: 4 Dead, 17 Hurt

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

A targeted attack in Birmingham, Alabama’s Five Points South entertainment area on Saturday night left four dead and 17 injured, amplifying concerns about the city’s escalating gun violence.

Around 11 p.m., multiple assailants fired into a crowded street before fleeing. Police Chief Scott Thurmond believes it was a planned hit on a specific individual, with bystanders caught in the crossfire. Over 100 shell casings were found at the scene.

Authorities identified three victims: Anitra Holloman (21), Tahj Booker (27), and Carlos McCain (27). The fourth victim’s identity is pending confirmation. Of the injured, four are in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene. Gabriel Eslami, 24, who was shot in the leg, likened it to “a horror movie.” Another witness, Dajon Singleton, recalled hearing “grieving-type screaming” as victims were rushed away.

Police suspect the use of illegal machine gun conversion devices, which transform semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic ones. This aligns with a recent federal crackdown on these devices in Birmingham.

The incident underscores Birmingham’s struggle with gun violence. The city saw a 41.7% increase in murders during 2024’s first quarter compared to 2023. Mayor Randall Woodfin called gun violence an “epidemic,” pushing for stricter laws and increased police resources.

Federal authorities, including the White House and FBI, have offered support. The shooting is one of 404 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

As the community mourns, city leaders are focusing on bringing the perpetrators to justice and implementing measures to curb gun violence. The tragedy has reignited debates about gun control, especially in states with lenient firearm laws like Alabama.

Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, Birmingham grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event, hoping it will catalyze meaningful change in addressing gun violence.
