Catherine Smith KC, who is the daughter of the late Labour leader John Smith, has been named in charge of Scottish law by the government. Today, Smith was made Advocate General for Scotland and given a life peerage. She will join her mother, Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill, in the House of Lords. She is now a member of the UK Government’s law team because of this new job.
Smith was excited about the job and said, “It is a great honour to be appointed the Advocate General for Scotland and join the team of UK Government law officers.” I’m excited to do what I can to protect and promote the rule of law and help this government live up to its promise of public service.
Smith has a lot of law knowledge for the job. He has been an Advocate since 2007 and a King’s Counsel in 2021. However, her hiring may cause a stir because her family has strong political ties to the Labour Party. This will add to the current worries about political appointments. Her appointment comes at a very important time for the Labour Party, which is facing criticism over top government jobs.
