Park Barbecue in Upstate New York: Shooting Leaves Two Women Dead and Five Injured

Read Time:1 Minute, 29 Second

ROCHESTER, New York — Two people were killed and five others were injured in a horrific shooting that happened on Sunday night at a cookout in Maplewood Park, Rochester, according to authorities. A number of bullets were fired into a throng of hundreds, including youngsters, who had assembled for the event soon after six o’clock in the evening.

Phylicia Council, 34, and Tyasia Manning, 25, were named as the victims. Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said of Manning, “she was a committed city employee recognized for her work with young people, helping them “become their best selves.” Evans stated, “These were innocent victims,” at a Monday press conference. “Last night, as I examined the murder scene, I noticed people’s shoes and a stroller. Summertime in a park should be accessible to our inhabitants, no matter what.”

Five more people were shot during the incident, although their injuries were not life-threatening. Since there have been no arrests made thus far, the Rochester Police Department is asking anybody with information or video from the site to come forward. “Maplewood Park is known for its beautiful views and events,” Evans continued. “It should not be remembered as a place marred by violence.”

The public is being asked for help by the authorities in investigating this crime. The Major Crimes Unit can be reached by email at MajorCrimes@CityofRochester.gov or by phone at 585-428-7157.

This neighborhood is in shock and grief at this senseless act of violence. Mayor Evans called the offenders “unmitigated cowards” and stressed the need of creating a secure atmosphere so that locals may enjoy public areas without fear. The city mourns the victims and their families and hopes that the inquiry will lead to fast justice and an end to tragedies like this.
