Meta to Increase AI-Generated Content Labeling: A Step Towards Openness

Following suggestions from its Oversight Board, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has announced intentions to expand the tagging of material created by artificial intelligence. The social media behemoth realizes that its present strategy is insufficient and plans to expand the use of the “Made with AI” logo to include a greater variety of media formats, such as audio, photos, and videos.

Meta will start using this designation in May in cases when its AI algorithms identify common signs of artificial intelligence manipulation in media. It will also be possible for users to declare that content they submit is produced by AI. Furthermore, the business may apply this tagging to information that fact-checkers have identified, probably downranking anything that is fraudulent or manipulated.

A recent case involving a video that was deliberately altered to depict President Joe Biden sexually caressing his granddaughter served as the impetus for this ruling. Because the video didn’t violate Meta’s manipulated media policy, the Oversight Board backed Meta’s decision to keep it up. But the Board suggested a quick review of the policies, especially in light of the 2024 elections that are coming up.

Meta has sided with the Oversight Board, acknowledging that dealing with distorted media without limiting free expression requires openness and more context. Vice president of content policy at Meta, Monika Bickert, provided a schedule for putting these adjustments into effect, which included stopping removals based just on breaking the altered video policy by the end of July.

Previously, photorealistic photographs produced with Meta’s AI technologies were labeled as “Imagined with AI” by Meta. Beyond the recommendations of the Board, the revised policy will go further, with Meta ready to provide content that presents a significant risk of materially misleading the public more prominent labeling.

In spite of these modifications, Meta is still dedicated to eliminating content—whether it was produced by AI or a human—that contravenes its Community Standards. This include taking action against any violation of policy, including violence, harassment, bullying, and voter interference.

The Oversight Board has acknowledged that it is pleased with Meta’s responsiveness and that it will keep an eye on the company’s implementation via upcoming reports on transparency.
