7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Vanuatu

Read Time:57 Second

A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck just 30 km west of Port Vila, Vanuatu’s largest city, on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported. The quake occurred at a depth of 57 km, followed by a 5.5 magnitude aftershock.

While a tsunami warning was initially issued, it was lifted less than two hours later. Early reports indicate significant damage, with communication lines down and rescue efforts hindered. Videos showed collapsed buildings, landslides blocking roads, and patients receiving treatment outside Vila Central Hospital.

A building in Port Vila housing diplomatic missions from the U.S., UK, France, and New Zealand was severely damaged, with New Zealand’s Foreign Ministry working to locate staff from its High Commission.

Although there are no immediate reports of casualties, authorities are still assessing the situation. Disrupted communications have delayed emergency responses.

Australia and New Zealand have confirmed there is no tsunami threat to their territories.

Vanuatu, an island nation with a population of 330,000 across 80 islands, lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area prone to frequent seismic activity. Aftershocks continue to be felt as residents remain alert.
